Serena Williams dropped just three games in a routine 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sweden’s Johanna Larsson Saturday afternoon, reaching the U.S. Open Round of 16 and passing Martina Navratilova for most Grand Slam victories with 307.

“That was pretty cool for me,” said Serena. “Obviously I want to keep that number going higher and see what can happen.”

The top seed and six-time champion won four straight games from 1-1 in the opening set to build a commanding 5-1 lead and never looked back, saving the only break point she faced and converting on four of her six break chances to advance in less than an hour.

Up next for Serena is Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova, who continued the best U.S. Open run of her career with a 6-2, 7-5 win over China’s Shuai Zheng.

Fifth-seeded Simona Halep fought off Timea Babos after trailing 1-3 in the third set, coming back for a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to advance to the fourth round.

“It feels good to have won the match … it was really tough. She played an unbelievable second and third set and didn’t miss at all,” said Halep.” She was hitting very strong, so it was a good challenge for me and it was a good match. I’m really proud that I could win it and come back from 3-1 down in the third set.”

After dominating the first set, Halep lost nine of the next 12 games, and was broken by the 31st-seeded Babos in her opening service game of that final set. But the Romanian broke back to get back on serve at 3-3, and would do so again at 5-4 to close things out and advance.

“I'm stronger mentally and I don't give up any more during the matches, even if I'm down,” added Halep on her improved mental toughness. “I also think that I'm feeling the game pretty well and I feel strong on my legs. I feel safe when I'm on the court. That's why I refuse to lose. I just say all the time, at every point, that I have another chance to get back and to win the match.”

Halep will play the 11th-seeded Carla Suarez-Navarro for a spot in the quarterfinals after Suarez-Navarro beat 19th-seeded Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday.

Agnieszka Radwanska blew past Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3, committing just five unforced errors and converting on six break points in an impressive performance to move through to the Round of 16 as well.

“It's always hard to compare if it's the best match or the best tournament or the best tennis,” said Radwanska. “I'm just very happy to just be playing at a really good level, my best level.”

Radwanska moves on to play Croatia’s Ana Konjuh, who hung on to beat Varvara Lepchenko of the United States 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
