American teenager and U.S. Open sensation CiCi Bellis announced on Tuesday that she will be turning pro and has signed with IMG.

“I’m excited to announce that I have turned pro, and signed with IMG,” Bellis announced on Twitter. “Thank you everyone for all your continued support!”

Bellis had previously verbally committed to play at Stanford University for 2017, but her recent success at the U.S. Open convinced her turning pro was the right decision.

“I think the past summer, and the WTA tournaments that I’ve done and my recent tournament here at the U.S. Open, changed that decision for me. That’s kind of what did it,” Bellis told Collette Lewis of Zoo Tennis. “I really just believed in myself, that I can do it and I can do it in the future. That I can compete at this level consistently.”

The Atherton, California native burst onto the scene two years ago when she defeated 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova in the U.S. Open first round. She received a wild card into the main draw that year due to her winning the USTA National Hard Court Championships, and became the youngest American to win a U.S. Open match since Mary Joe Fernandez in 1986.

This year, Bellis had to come through qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw, and did so by winning all three of her matches.

“I think just playing those extra few matches have made me so much more comfortable,” Bellis said of having to come through qualifying. “Just getting used to the surface of the courts and playing on them in general is a big advantage for me.”

Bellis used that to her advantage, winning her opening round match before coming back from a set down to defeat fellow American Shelby Rogers in the second round.

Her tournament would come to an end in the third round, as she fell to eventual champion Angelique Kerber in straight sets under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
