World number two Serena Williams announced on Friday that she will not be competing in the Wuhan Open and China Open tournaments, citing a lingering shoulder injury.

“I am disappointed that I will not be able to compete at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open or the China Open due to continuing issues with my right shoulder,” she said in a statement. “I have been practicing and playing but my shoulder is still not fit for tournament play.

I wish the tournaments great success and I’m sure the fans will enjoy some great tennis. I am focused on getting ready to compete at the WTA Finals in Singapore.”

Williams, the 2013 champion at the China Open, recently had her spot at the top of the world rankings taken away by U.S. Open champion Angelique Kerber. Williams lost to Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals, and afterwards her coach, Patrick Mouratoglu, said she was slowed down by a knee injury in that match.

The top-ranked American’s goal is to get fully healthy and return in time for the end of the year WTA Finals in Singapore, a title she has won five times in her career.
