World number one Novak Djokovic withdrew from the China Open with an elbow injury, the Serb announced on Wednesday.

“I am extremely disappointed not to be able to compete at the China Open this year,” said Djokovic. “I’m still recovering from my elbow injury and have been advised not to play until my condition improves. I will continue my rehabilitation and hope to return to the ATP Tour as soon as possible.”

Djokovic’s next scheduled tournament is the Shangahi Masters, which begins in the second week of October.

Last week, Serena Williams pulled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury.
