In a marathon third round match earlier in the day, Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova outlasted newly-minted world number one Angelique Kerber 6-7(10), 7-5, 6-4 to reach the Wuhan Open quarterfinals.

“I won after playing a long time. I feel happy. But as well I feel tired, and the tournament is still going, so I don’t feel that satisfied,” said Kvitova. “I think it was a great match from both of us. I really gave everything today. I think same has her. I think it was really about a few points. It was a great battle.”

It certainly was a great battle between the two as Kerber was playing in her first tournament as the number one ranked player in the world, and the German fought back from a 2-4 first set hole to force the opening set into a tiebreaker.

Each player at set points in the decider, but it was eventually Kerber who took the set thanks to back to back errant forehands from Kvitova. The Czech immediately responded in the second set, though, breaking Kerber in the opening service game.

Although they would trade breaks twice throughout the set, Kvitova never relinquished her lead and went on to serve out the set to force a deciding third set.

The third set saw some incredible rallies between the two lefties, but it was once again Kvitova who got the early break, and went on to save 10 break points throughout the set to complete her comeback and upend Kerber.

“It’s always tough to play against Petra. I think we both played on a really high level for over three hours,” said Kerber. “At the end I think there’s no loser. I did everything today. I was fighting until the end.”

Kvitova moves on to play Great Britain’s Johanna Konta. The 11th seeded Konta knocked off seventh-seed Carla Suarez-Navarro 7-5, 7-6(6) in her third-round match on Wednesday.

American Madison Keys pushed through to the final eight in Wuhan with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Russian qualifier Daria Kasatkina. Keys takes on fourth-seed Simona Halep next.

Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska put together a clinical performance in dispatching the red-hot Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-2 to book her spot in the quarterfinals.

“I’m just very glad to win this match in two sets,” said Radwanska afterwards. “Obviously, it’s never easy against Caroline and I was just playing very good tennis tonight. I’m very happy with the win.”

The third-seed Radwanska moves on to play Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who eliminated American and defending champion Venus Williams 6-2, 6-2.
