World number one Angelique Kerber entered Wednesday’s second round matchup knowing there would be some added pressure as she took on fellow German Carina Witthoeft, a player who idolizes her older compatriot.

But the defending champion Kerber, who was celebrating her 29th birthday, pushed through to the Australian Open third round with a 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-2 victory.

“I was making a lot of mistakes in the important moments. But at the end, I’m happy that I won the match. It was not so easy,” said Kerber. “The conditions were also a little bit difficult today. At the end, I won, and this is all that counts for me.”

Both players exchanged breaks through the first three games, and it was Kerber who held serve first for the 3-1 lead, and went on to win the opener 6-2.

But in the second set, Witthoeft fought back and began pushing Kerber all over the court. Kerber also began to struggle with her serves, committing four double faults, and had clear frustration on her face. Witthoeft was the better player in the second set and would go on to win it in a tiebreaker.

In the third set, Kerber cut down on her errors and got the decisive break for a 3-1 lead in the decider. Four games later, she wrapped things up with one more break to push through in two hours and eight minutes.

Kerber will meet Kristyna Pliskova next. Pliskova upset 27th seed Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 7-6(8) to advance on Wednesday.

Venus Williams had no problems with Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 victory, and will play Duan Ying-Ying in the third round after Ying-Ying knocked off Varvara Lepchenko 6-1, 3-6, 10-8.

Two other Americans joined Venus in the third round with victories on Wednesday. Alison Riske beat 20th seed Shuai Zhang 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-1 to reach the third round in Melbourne for the second time in her career.

She will face Romania’s Sonora Cirstea next. Cirseta upset 10th seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro 7-6(1), 6-3.

Coco Vandeweghe powered her way through with a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over France’s Paulina Parmentier. Vandeweghe blasted 39 winners and converted on four break point chances to move on in one hour and 48 minutes.

Vandeweghe faces off with Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard, who maintained her successful start to 2017 with a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory over Shuai Peng.

Seventh-seed Garbine Muguruza, eighth-seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, 11th seed Elina Svitolina, 24th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and 32nd seed Anastasija Sevastova all advanced in straight sets, while Mona Barthel upset 29th seed Monica Puig 6-4, 6-4.
