Rafael Nadal advanced to the 30th Grand Slam quarterfinal of his career on Monday as the Spaniard held off sixth-seed Gael Monfils of France 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to reach the final eight in Melbourne.

Nadal secured the only break point of the opening set and won 76 percent of points on his first serve to routinely win the opening set. In the second, he produced great work from the baseline and broke Monfils three times, hitting 10 winners to just four unforced errors to take a commanding two-sets-to-love lead.

Monfils would save four break points in the third set and converted on his only break chance to win the frame and push the match into a fourth set.

The charismatic Frenchman got the first break of the fourth set to take a 3-2 lead and consolidated it to go up 4-2, but couldn’t muster up anything else after that. Nadal  broke back for 3-4 and would win the final four games of the set to close out the match in two hours and 55 minutes.

“It means a lot because for me I really start the season playing quarterfinals in a Grand Slam again, especially on hard court after a couple of years without being in this round,” said Nadal. “Very happy with an important victory against a very good opponent.”

In the quarterfinals, Nadal will square off with third-seed Milos Raonic, who defeated him in the Brisbane quarterfinals to start the year.

Raonic advanced with a 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over 13th seed Roberto Bautista-Agut on Monday.

“I was very fortunate to get the win today—there were some moments when it wasn’t looking so good,” said Raonic. “I was happy that I was able to find a way to pull through. And this atmosphere—especially when the roof is closed, the noise stays in a little bit more, so it was great to be here. We live to see another day.”

The other men’s singles quarterfinal set up on Monday will see 15th seed Grigor Dimitrov take on 11th seed David Goffin.

Dimitrov ended the run of Denis Istomin, who defeated six-time champion Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament, with a 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-1 victory.

Goffin came back from a set down to beat eighth-seed Dominic Thiem 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-2.
