Caroline Wozniacki hung on to defeat Heather Watson on Friday, beating the Briton 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to reach the Aegon International final in Eastbourne, England.

The 2009 champion needed just 30 minutes to wrap up the first set, breaking three times to take the early lead.

Watson responded in the second set, fighting back from an early break down to even things at 2-2 which started a streak of four straight games as she took a 5-2 advantage. Two games later, she wrapped things up to force a deciding third set.

This time, it was Wozniacki who fell behind with an early break, but answered back with a break of her own to knot things up at 2-2. Both players would hold serve the rest of the way until 6-5, when Wozniacki broke for the final time, closing things out on her second match point to win the two hour and nine minute match.

In the final, Wozniacki will take on Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. Pliskova was set to take on Johanna Konta in Friday’s other semifinal, but Konta was forced to withdraw.

Konta fell hard during her quarterfinal match against world number one Angelique Kerber, injuring her spine.

The Briton said she has not made a decision on her status for Wimbledon, which begins next week.

“Right now my priority is to look after myself, quite honestly,” she said. “I’m just looking to just make sure that I’m in a good place physically and health-wise to be able to compete next week, but more important just to be in a good place health-wise.”
