The New York Empire presented by Citi earned a hard-fought win in an exhilarating matchup against the Washington Kastles, 20-19, at Kastles Stadium in the nation’s capital. The win improves the New York Empire’s record to 5-4 on the season and moves the team into second place in the overall Mylan World TeamTennis standings.

New York dropped the first set of the night, mixed doubles, 5-3, before taking control of the next two sets, women’s and men’s doubles, to take a 13-11 lead into halftime. Washington’s mixed doubles pair of Bruno Soares and Anastasia Rodionova got the better of New York’s Neal Skupski and Kirsten Flipkens, but Flipkens returned in the second set, women’s doubles, to make easy work of Rodionova and Madison Brengle alongside teammate Maria Sanchez. The third set, which featured New York’s Mardy Fish and Skupski and Washington’s Soares and recent Wimbledon semi-finalist Sam Querrey, went back and forth before New York ultimately prevailed to win the set 5-4 in a tiebreak.

Coming out of halftime, Kirsten Flipkens kept the momentum going for New York. The Belgian defeated Madison Brengle, 5-3, extending the Empire’s lead to 18-14 going into the final set. However, the drama of the night was just beginning. Less than two weeks removed from his semi-final appearance at Wimbledon, Sam Querrey continued his excellent play in the final set against Mardy Fish. Querrey won 5-1 to force a supertiebreaker. Fish showed incredible resilience to bounce back and take the supertiebreaker, 7-1, and earn the win for the New York Empire.
