World number one Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week’s Collector Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden, citing having not yet fully recovered from withdrawing from last week’s women’s doubles event at Wimbledon. Last week, Serena, teaming with her sister Venus, was forced to pull out of their second round match with Kristina Barrois & Stefanie Voegele after struggling during warm-ups and requiring treatment from the doctor.

Serena is the defending Swedish Open champion, having defeated Sweden’s Johanna Larsson, 6–4, 6–1.

"I decided not to play in Bastad, because I am still not feeling 100%,” said Serena in a statement. “I want to be in perfect condition to go back on-court, but unfortunately, it's not the case. I really hope to be able to get back to training from next week.”

Serena was also the defending champ at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open in early May as she was forced to withdraw due to a left thigh injury. She returned a week later to capture the Internazionali BNL d'Italia title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sara Errani. She was ousted by the 2014 Australian Open in January by Ana Ivanovic, and seeded number one at the second Grand Slam of 2014, the French Open, she was defeated in the second round by the unseeded Garbine Muguruza6-2, 6-2. At Wimbledon, she was eliminated from play in round three by the 25th-seeded Alize Cornet. Despite three Grand Slam losses in 2014, she still holds a commanding lead atop the WTA Women’s Singles Rankings over the number two-ranked Li Na of China.
