World number one-ranked Serbian Novak Djokovic will have an opportunity to defend his Australian Open this weekend after he defeated Andy Murray of Great Britain, the number four seed, 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Park.

The five-plus-hour match included single point rallies of up to and over 40 shots. Djokovic, winner of three Grand Slam titles in 2011, said that his semifinals meeting with Murray was a massive test for him.

"It was a very physical match," said Djokovic. "It was one of the best matches I have played."

Djokovic came out strong in the first set in style, and Murray did not look like a strong opponent for Djokovic. However, that all changed in the second set when Murray rallied back hard and took the set 6-3. Murray continued on that pattern and took the third set as well in a tie-breaker.

The tide turned when the top-seeded Djokovic came back strong with an early break in the fourth and continued on that path to take the fourth set 6-1 and even the match at two sets apiece. Murray realized the fourth set would not be his after falling far behind and prepared for the fifth set where he was able to fight back with all his might to even the set at 5-5. Murray was unable to put up a bigger battle than the number one player in the world, and lost the match to Djokovic in the fifth, 5-7.

“After last year, the year that Novak’s had, I think there’s a very fine line between being number one in the world and being three or four. I think that gap, I feel tonight I closed it,” said Murray after the match. “My job over the next two or three months is to surpass him and the guys in front of me. So take a lot of hard work, and hopefully I can do it.”

Djokovic advances to the 2012 Australian Open finals where he will face the number two-ranked player in the world, Spain’s Rafael Nadal. Both have won this tournament in the past and the top level of play is expected once again from both sides. Nadal’s path to the semis includes wins over the number three seed, Roger Federer of Switzerland; the seventh-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych; the number 18 seed, Nadal’s fellow countryman from Spain, Feliciano Lopez; unseeded Slovakian Lukas Lacko; Germany’s Tommy Haas; and American Alex Kuznetsov in the opening round of play.

Grand Slam finals history runs deep between Djokovic and Nadal, as the two met twice last year in the finals of a Grand Slam event, in June at Wimbledon and in September at the U.S. Open. Both times, Djokovic was the victor.
