Dante Brown of Harlem, N.Y. was named USTA Eastern’s Leslie J. FitzGibbon Tennis Man of the Year for his contribution to tennis as a teacher, director and community advocate. Brown will receive his award at USTA Eastern’s Tennis Conference on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Renaissance Hotel in White Plains, N.Y.

USTA Eastern is ushering in a new era, as the association welcomes Jenny Schnitzer as its newest executive director and chief operations officer. Schnitzer will bring her two-decade plus experience to the table in the hopes of uniting the tennis community in the Eastern Section, and giving back to the sport that has given her so much in her lifetime.

The USTA has announced three moves for the executive staff at the new USTA National Campus which is being constructed in Orlando, Fla. Kurt Kamperman will become chief executive of Community Tennis and USTA National Campus; Craig Morris has been hired as general manager of Community Tennis and Youth Tennis; and Tim Cass has been hired as general manager of the USTA National Campus.

The United States Tennis Association has announced a broad professional development initiative that will help prepare the next generation of tennis providers including tennis professionals, coaches, and administrators. Titled USTA University (USTAU), the program will offer curricula in tennis, management, hospitality and sport science.

The Knickerbocker Field Club located in the Prospect Park South neighborhood of Brooklyn offers a free neighborhood tennis clinic for children ages six through 18, two afternoons a week throughout the summer. The program began in 2003, with about 30 neighborhood children, and has grown to more than 75 kids of all ages and skill levels.

For the third consecutive year there will be two job fairs, starting with an exclusive opportunity for residents of the borough of Queens, N.Y. on Tuesday, July 7 from 2:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. followed by a second opportunity open to the public on Wednesday, July 8 from 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

The USTA National Indoor Championships got underway at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows on Friday, as a number of men and women took to the courts. The championships consisted of five fields; men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles, and we begin the week with the round of 16 set in each draw.
