USTA Eastern will honor 27 junior players on Aug. 27 at the at the Indoor Training Center of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for their outstanding performance in Sectional Tournaments and provide them with free grounds passes to see the best players in the world compete on Opening Day of the 2012 U.S. Open.

Children in Harlem got a chance to play tennis and learn about the history of African-Americans in the sport on Aug. 19, as USTA Eastern and the Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program hosted a free 10 & Under Tennis Play Day at Howard Bennett Playground. The event featured tennis clinics for kids using equipment tailored to their age and size, and a special mobile exhibit, “Breaking the Barriers: The ATA and Black Tennis Pioneers.”

USTA Serves, the National Charitable Foundation of the USTA, has announced that it has awarded the New York Junior Tennis League (NYJTL) in Woodside, N.Y., a $12,500 grant. During its 2012 spring funding cycle, USTA Serves awarded 44 community tennis and education organizations more than $400,000 in grants.

The 12th Annual Jana Hunsaker Memorial Wheelchair Tennis Tournament was held from June 7-10 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Jana Hunsaker was the director of the wheelchair tennis program at the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park center until her death in 2000.
