The West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills has named former French Open doubles champion Luke Jensen as its new Director of Racquet Sports, the club has announced.

Jensen, who is the first tennis professional to be given this title in the 126-year history of the club, will start in his new role on May 1.

“After a five-month process, where we evaluated a large number of highly-qualified candidates, it became clear to both our Search Committee and myself that Luke Jensen stood out,” stated West Side Tennis Club CEO Mario DiPreta. “He will bring us great energy and enthusiasm, a depth of experience, and a love of the sport and its history.

Jensen, best known for his success in doubles partnering with brother Murphy, was ranked as high as No. 6 in the ATP Doubles rankings during his 11-year career. In addition to his French Open title, Jensen was a winner of nine other titles, and was nicknamed “Dual-Hand Luke” due to his ability to hit 130 mile-per-hour serves with either hand. At the University of Southern California, Jensen was an All-American, and as a junior, was ranked number-one in the world in both singles and doubles

“Luke Jensen, our search committee feels, has the potential to be transformational for our tennis program for both adult members and juniors,” commented Club Captain Jon Knipe, who co-chaired the Club’s Search Committee. “We’re very excited that our CEO agreed with our recommendation, and convinced Luke to join us.”

Since his retirement from the pro tour, Jensen has worked as a journalist and commentator for ESPN, as a college coach for Syracuse University, and as tennis director at the Sea Island Resort in Georgia. He is also the founder of the Jensen-Schmidt Tennis Academy for Down Syndrome.

“The West Side Tennis Club is the most significant tennis club in American tennis history,” Luke Jensen said. “It demands and deserves the highest standards of excellence and I am committed to providing that at all times. I see this as the opportunity of a tennis lifetime to lead its tennis program forward while honoring the past.”
