Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki defeated Venus Williams for the first time in her career to win her first WTA Finals trophy, beating the American 6-4, 6-4 in Singapore on Sunday.

Wozniacki had to hold off a surge from Venus, who rallied from 0-5 down in the second set, but managed to hang on to beat her for the first time in eight chances.

“I’m still shaking,” Wozniacki said afterwards. “I was up 5-0, everything was going well, and all of a sudden, Venus just starts upping her game. She went for her shots, she started serving to my body, and I’m just so happy that I managed to win in the end.”

The Dane’s previous best showing at the end-of-year finals was a runner-up finish in 2010, but the sixth-seed would not be denied this time around.

Her win in Singapore brings her match wins to 60 as she earned her 13th win over a top 10 player, both are the most on the WTA Tour this season. She is projected to finish the year ranked third in the world.
