2018 US Open Day Two Preview
The second day of the 2018 US Open will bring the first round of singles action to a close with a number of compelling matchups that feature six players who have hoisted the major’s trophy before.
On the men’s side, five-time champion Roger Federer opens up the night session on Arthur Ashe against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishikoka. Federer, whose last title in Flushing Meadows came in 2008, had his streak of 100 consecutive service game holds snapped in Cincinnati, but will look to get a new streak going when he kicks off his US Open campaign on Monday.
Novak Djokovic, the reigning Wimbledon champion who holds two US Open titles, gets his final major of the year started against Hungarian Martin Fucsovics. The two have never met before, and Djokovic comes into Queens with a lot of momentum after capturing the title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Long Island’s Noah Rubin will make his second appearance in the US Open main draw as he opens up play on Court 7 against Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Kukushkin.
The winner of this title two years ago, Germany’s Angelique Kerber will look to build off of her Wimbledon triumph earlier this summer as she takes on Margarita Gasparyan in her opening round match. That match will be the second one onto Louis Armstrong stadium on Tuesday, and the stadium’s action will close with 2006 champion Maria Sharapova squaring off with Swiss qualifier Patty Schnyder. Kicking the day off inside Ashe will be second-seed Caroline Wozniacki and Samantha Stosur, the Aussie who hoisted this trophy seven years ago.
