American Steve Johnson defended his title at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston, Texas as he beat compatriot Tennys Sandgren 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4 to capture the Houston title for the second straight year.
“It means a lot [to win] here. This is one of the best tournaments of the year,” said Johnson. “You get the atmosphere of the country club, everything that goes with it. The people are awesome, everybody involved with the tournament makes it so special. Always happy to come back here and start my clay-court season.”
The match was a tight one into the third set, but Johnson pulled away when he secured the decisive break at 4-4 in the decider. The ensuing game, Johnson served out the set and the match to clinch his third ATP World Tour title.
With the win, Johnson is expected to re-enter the Top 50 of the ATP Rankings.
