Rafael Nadal of Spain can now breathe a sigh of relief after he secured his first win of the Western & Southern Open, an Olympus U.S. Open Series event in Cincinnati. Nadal never got the chance to do that as he was upset in his opening round match of Montreal by Croatia’s Ivan Dodig. For Rafa, you know he was looking to come out and make a statement after he was embarrassed in Montreal. His opponent was no easy contest in veteran Frenchman Julien Benneteau. However, Nadal would not be stopped on this day as he powered his way through to a straight set victory, 6-4, 7-5.

As far as the other top seeds go, number for in the world Novak Djokovic of Serbia had little problem dismissing young American Ryan Harrison in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 to keep his hot streak going. Fourth seeded Andy Murray of Great Britain dispatched Argentina David Nalbandian easily in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 much to the crowd’s dismay as they thought they would be in for a nice showdown before these two well-known players. However, Nalbandian is nowhere near the shape Murray is in, physically and mentally on the tennis court right now, hence the easy victory for Murray.

David Ferrer of Spain seeded number five is making his comeback after a short layoff to rest an injury, and was able to best Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Ferrer is looking to get a few matches under his belt before the U.S. Open. France’s Gael Monfils, and American Mardy Fish were able to come through in their matches as well. The only notable upset on the day came at the hands of American Alex Bogomolov Jr., who was able to get the better of France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. As we get into the later rounds, top seeds will begin to clash with other seeds which will be very fun and entertaining to watch.
