The 2011 U.S. Open officially kicked off on Monday, Aug. 29 with great weather and even greater matches. The men’s side of the draw saw Germany’s Tommy Haas defeat Jonathan Dasnieres De Veigy of France in four sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1. De Veigy put up a fight on the new Court 17; however, after battling back in the third, Haas’s momentum overpowered De Veigy in the fourth set to take the match.

Another round one match which had the crowd on the edge of their seats was the number 15 seed Serbian Viktor Troicki taking on Colombian Alejandro Falla. The duo took it to five sets after Troicki gave up two match points in the fourth to eventually lose the set. The fifth set went back and forth until the very end, with the crowd giving a standing ovation on points until Falla took the fifth, 7-5 to win the match, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Troicki was the only seeded player to fall in round one thus far.

American Ryan Harrison fell in straight sets to the 27-seven seed, Marin Cilic of Monaco after attempting to come back in a third set tie-breaker but was unsuccessful. Frenchman Gael Monfils defeated Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-4; Switzerland’s Roger Federer easily handled Santiago Giraldo from Colombia, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2; and top-ranked American Mardy Fish beat Tobias Kamke from Germany, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in other round one action on the men’s side.

In the women’s draw, the first big upset of the Open came when Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania ousted current Wimbledon champion and the number five seed, Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, 7-6, 6-3. Dulgheru advances to face Romanian Monica Niculescu in Tuesday’s action.

American Venus Williams made her return to tennis after being absent for two months with a straight-set victory over Russian Vesna Dolonts, 6-4, 6-3. Williams entered the draw unseeded after dropping to 36th after only playing ten matches over the last year.

" I’m not sure I expected to be so sharp," said Venus. "I just want to play tennis and take it one match at a time."

American Melanie Oudin lost in straight sets to Romina Oprandi of Italy, 0-6, 6-7 (7-9). Russian Maria Sharapova didn’t show her best play in the first set against Heather Watson from Great Britain after dropping the first, 3-6. She fought back to take the second set in a close 7-5 and overpowered Watson to take the third and match, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Eight-seed Marion Bartoli from France defeated Russian Alexandra Panova in straight sets, but it was not without a fight. Panova was up in the first set a break, before Bartoli broke back and held to take the first 7-5. Bartoli’s uncommon two hand forehand was accurate in the second, where she took the match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
