Roger Federer of Switzerland defeated Australian Lleyton Hewitt, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-2, 6-3, evening the score against Australia to 1-1 on the second day of the Davis Cup World Group playoffs. Federer flew into Australia after losing to eventual winner Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the U.S. Open where he started off slow dropping the first set to Hewitt 5-7.

“I all of a sudden realized this was much more difficult than I expected,” Federer said. “I thought it was going to be tough, but once on court I was a bit afraid of hitting my shots because of all the bad bounces out on this grass court, and I was just very happy to see that I got so much better as the match went on.”

Federer was able however to come back and take the next three straight sets to win in four. He has a 18-8 individual record against Hewitt who was once a number one world ranked player. Hewitt did have chances with break point opportunities in the fourth, however Federer held his own where he took the match in two hours and 50 min.

“Halfway through the second match I was thinking, `I want 2-0,”’ Australia captain Pat Rafter said. “I was getting my hopes up there for a little bit, but you expect Roger to find his game and start serving well. That’s why he has been at the top so long.”

Hewitt & Chris Guccione will go on to play Federer & Stanislas Wawrinka, who won the gold title in the 2008 Olympics. The team that wins the playoffs will take a spot in the Davis Cup World Group next year.
