U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic’s back muscle injury has required him to take much needed rest from the game after withdrawing from his recent Davis Cup match. He attemped to play through his Davis Cup match, but was unable to due to the extenuating pain. He skipped the opening singles match as well, and went on to state that, "It’s not as serious as we have thought. It’s a partial rupture of a back muscle that deserves rest."

Djokovic went on to say that he may have to pass up the tournaments being held in China in October including the Shanghai Masters and the China Open held in Beijing. "I hope I will recover by then. Anyway, I won’t risk the worsening of the injury and that’s why it is hard to predict for how long I will rest," said Djokovic. This is the first time that Djokovic has faced this specific back injury.

Djokovic was able to defeat Rafael Nadal in four sets at the 2011 U.S. Open to capture the Men’s Singles Title. This win took Djokovic to a total of three major titles this season.
