World number three-ranked Roger Federer of Switzerland has withdrawn from next month's Shanghai Masters in order to rest some injuries and allow for a six-week break. Federer, who is now 30 years of age, has played three Davis Cup matches since his loss to eventual winner Novak Djokovic in the 2011 U.S. Open semifinals.
Federer said that he needs "necessary time to rest and recuperate after a long summer." He did apologize to fans for not being able to attend this year at Shanghai, but says he hopes to compete in the 2012 Shanghai Masters. Federer's next scheduled match is Oct. 31 in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland.
