The number three seed, Frenchman Gael Monfils has been defeated at the Valencia Open in Valencia, Spain by unseeded Marcel Granollers of Spain, 7-6(12), 3-6, 6-4. The win advances Granollers to the semifinals where he will face the winner of the match between Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and American Sam Querrey. Granollers, last year’s Valencia Open runner-up to fellow countryman David Ferrer, saved four set points in the first-set tiebreaker.

Monfils rallied to claim the second set, but Granollers took the match when Monfils had experience with his serve late and sent his final forehand wide.

In other action on Friday, the top-seeded Ferrer will face Russian Nikolay Davydenko, and Spain’s Juan Carlos Ferrero will meet Argentina’s Juan Monaco.
