Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark has lost her quarterfinal match at the Sydney International to Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Wozniacki’s loss clears the path for Petra Kvitova to take over the top spot atop the WTA rankings prior to the beginning of next week’s Australian Open.

While Wozniacki is having trouble headed into the year’s first Grand Slam, 21-year-old Czech Kvitova continued on her roll of victories where she defeated Daniela Hantuchova, 6-0, 6-4, to advance to the Sydney International semifinals where she will face China’s Li Na. Kvitova, who assisted the Czech Republic in the Hopman Cup, needed only an hour to defeat Hantuchova.

“I’m still on track,” Kvitova said of the top ranking. “But still, it’s two matches away and the next one is really tough. It’s still a long way away, so we will see.”
