Ivanovic Defeats Schiavone to Advance at Dubai Tennis Championships

Ana Ivanovic of Serbia has defeated Francesca Schiavone of Italy to advance to the second round of the Dubai Tennis Championships, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, after breezing through the first set of the match. The first set lasted just 33 min. with Schiavone attempting a comeback in the second; however it was no match for the 24-year-old.

Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland also advanced after defeating Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5. The first set lasted 27 min., but it would take her another 2 hours to win the match. After she lost the second set in a tie-breaker, she fought back and had to regain concentration in the third. The third set was also close, however Radwanska prevailed and took the match in the third set, 7-5.

Russian Maria Kirilenko withdrew from a doubles match and Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia also retired after injuringb her hamstring. Kirilienko has a neck injury; however, is schedule to go on to play against Ivanovic in the second round in singles action.

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, the number three seed, will face Simona Halep of Romania in hopes of defending her title. Lucie Safarova also defeated Petra Martic 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Safarova will now compete against the U.S. Open Champion Samantha Stosur in the second round.

French Open champion Li Na, Vera Zvonareva, and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova all withdrew from the tournament due to illness.
