Roddick Shocked by Malisse at Morgan Keegan Championships

American Andy Roddick has been upset by Xavier Malisse of Belgium, 7-6, 7-5, in the opening round match on Wednesday night during the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Memphis, Tenn. Roddick, who has fallen to 27th in the ATP Tour rankings, had his earliest departure after 12 prior appearances. Roddick has been deterred by both hamstring and ankle problems and was unable to win two set points. Roddick was looking to defend his title, and was 9-0 against Malisse in his career. Malisse who came into the event 0-4 on the year, was looking to regain his form that once had him ranked as high as 19th on the ATP World Tour.

In other action, Olivier Rochus, also of Belgium, defeated Russian Alex Bogomolov Jr.,1-6, 6-4, 7-6, and Germany’s Philipp Petzschner took down France’s Julien Benneteau 7-6, 7-6. Both upsetted the top seeds and have advanced to the next round of play. In other matches, Czech Radek Stepanek won over American Bobby Reynolds, 6-3, 6-2; and South African Kevin Anderson advanced with a defeat over American qualifier Robby Ginepri, 7-5, 6-2.
