Victoria Azarenka, the 2012 Australian Open champion, has withdrawn from the Dubai Tennis Championships after sustaining an ankle injury. The 22-year-old will take two to three days of rest in hopes of healing. She was on a 17 match winning streak and this break will allow her to go home and spend much needed time with her family.

"Obviously it’s very disappointing, but, I mean, its life. It’s sport. I just have to take care of it and that’s it," said Azarenka, currently ranked number one in the world. "I can take a couple of days off just to see, and hopefully, it will settle down for us as long as I don’t need a scan or anything."

She was supposed to go up against Julia Goerges of Germany in the next round of play. The injury came about during the semifinals of the Qatar Open; however, she was able to shake it off long enough to win the Qatar Open against Sam Stosur, 6-1, 6-2.
