American Venus Williams will return to action on the WTA Tour in March after receiving a wild card to compete in her first tournament since her withdrawal in August with an autoimmune disease, making her return at the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Venus returned to active competition in February, teaming with Liezel Huber for a doubles victory at a Fed Cup match for the United States against Belarus. Venus has won the Sony Ericsson Open, in 1998, 1999 and for a third time in 2001. The last time she came close was in 2010 when she made it to the finals of the event.

On the men’s side of the draw, Argentina’s David Nalbandian and Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez have received wild card entries on the men’s side according to officials. The 2012 Sony Ericsson Open begins Tuesday, March 20.
