Jamie Loeb of Ossining, N.Y. pulled off a big upset win today in the second round of the Wimbledon Junior Tournament. Loeb, who trains at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, defeated 10th-seeded Camila Giangreco Campiz of Paraguay in straight sets.

Loeb played well throughout the match, but the critical point in the match came late in the first set. Loeb, serving at 5-5 was broken, allowing Giangreco Campiz to try and serve out the set. Loeb showed tremendous mental toughness though and broke back sending the first set into a tie-break. Using the momentum she gained off the break of serve, Loeb parlayed it into dominating the tie-breaker 7-1 and taking the first set.

Early in the second set, things were tight until Loeb broke to go up 3-2. She then took control winning the next three games as well to finish off the match.

New York Tennis Magazine spoke with Loeb’s coach Felix Alvarado (from the John McEnroe Tennis Academy) after the match and he was clearly very pleased with her performance.

"Jaime played hard and the key to her win was how well she moved," said Alvarado. "She ran every ball down and played aggressively when she needed to. It was a great win."

Next up for Loeb will be a third round encounter with Alice Matteucci of Italy. Asked about the matchup and it was clear that Alvarado and the JMTA team are excited about the way Jamie is playing.

Alvarado said, "Jamie just needs to play her game. She has a good chance if she is focused and sticks to her game plan."

Jamie followed up her singles win with a doubles win later in the day. Loeb and her partner Ayaka Okuno of Japan defeated Marie Bouzkova & Helen Ploskina in the first round of the Wimbledon juniors in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
