Top seed and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro defeated Switzerland’s Henri Lakksonen 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday at the Swiss Indoors Basel. Del Potro is closing in on his 300th match win and improved to a 298-120 career lifetime record. He will next face Marcos Baghdatis, and has reached the finals at his past two tournaments, winning the Tokyo title over Milos Raonic and finishing runner-up in Shanghai to Novak Djokovic.

Also on Tuesday, it was Richard Gasquet who was an upset loser, 6-4, 6-2, to fellow countryman Michael Llodra. Llodra claimed his first tour-level win since Wimbledon as he won 72 percent of his service points and broke Gasquet three times. He is bidding to reach his first ATP World Tour quarterfinal since February at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier and goes on to face Paul-Henri Mathieu, who defeated Denis Kudla 6-4, 7-5. Also on Tuesday, it was Canadian Vasek Pospisil making his debut at the event with a 6-4, 6-4 win over last week’s Vienna runner-up Robin Haase.
