On Friday, Serena Williams became the first player into the semifinals of the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul, defeating Petra Kvitova, 6-2, 6-3, to improve to 3-0 in her group in just 72 minutes. With the win, Serena now has 13 consecutive TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championship wins. Martina Navratilova holds the record with 21 consecutive wins in Istanbul from 1983-1987.

"I feel pretty good—I was really aggressive tonight," Serena said. "Petra was aggressive too, but I think my serve did really well. I'm just glad to still be alive in the tournament—I didn't have any expectations coming here, I just wanted to come here and enjoy myself, and that's what I've done.

With a 3-0 record so far in Istanbul, Serena will finish first in the Red Group, no matter what happens on Friday. Kvitova could still qualify for the semifinals as she and Angelique Kerber are both 1-1 in the Red Group, and the two of them will play each other for second place on Friday.

Also on Friday in Istanbul, Li Na defeated a physically impaired Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-1 to not only lead the White Group with a 3-0 record, but to lock up the first place position in the White Group as well.

Azarenka hurt her back while serving in the sixth game of the first set and was in pain for the rest of the match, taking a medical timeout and receiving treatment during several changeovers.

"I know this is not the best way to win the match," said Li. "I saw her a little bit bothered with her back but she kept playing, so it was very tough for me mentally. If she were healthy she would have been a very tough opponent today. Unfortunately she wasn't healthy. I have to enjoy this moment, but I hope the injury isn't too bad and she can come back soon."

Li improved to 3-0 in the White Group to finish in first place, and is now through to the semifinals of the WTA Championships for the first time in three tries. Should she reach the finals, she will rise to number three in the WTA’s Women’s Singles Rankings after the tournament.
