Rafael Nadal defeated Gael Monfils in the finals of the 2014 Qatar ExxonMobil Open, opening his 2014 campaign with his 61st career title with a 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2 victory. With Novak Djokovic opting not to play in Doha, Nadal further built on his lead at number one in the Emirates ATP Rankings, adding 250 points as well as $188,600 in prize money.

Nadal, who has now won titles in 17 different countries. Monfils finished runner-up to Roger Federer at Doha in 2006 and runner-up to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2012.

“If I am playing the way that I played in the first set, I think I will be very competitive in Australia,” Nadal said. “Between here and Australia, the good thing is I am going to have one week, and I don’t go there thinking about the adaptation of my game. I go in there thinking about the things that I want to keep practicing to be very competitive. I want to keep practising in the same way that I played today. I think that’s the right way.”
