Lucie Safarova pulled off the latest surprise at the Apia International Sydney on Tuesday, defeating Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 7-6(7) to move into the quarterfinals. Wozniacki led 3-0 in the first set and held four set points in the second set tie-break, three at 6-3 and a fourth at 7-6, but Safarova won the last eight points of the first set and six of the last seven points of the tie-breaker to finish the win. Up next for Safarova is the second-seeded Petra Kvitova, a winner over American Christina McHale in dominating fashion, 6-1, 6-0.

"Caroline started really well and was going for the shots and just making a lot of winners,” Safarova said. “I was just hanging in there and trying to be quicker and more get into the play and be the first one taking over and putting pressure. So I caught it, then won my first serve at 3-0 down and got into the play. Was overall a very, very good two sets. I’m happy with my game today or the performance now here in Sydney. It’s the start of the season, so I’m really happy to start that well.”

Kvitova beat Safarova in their only previous meeting at New Haven a year and a half ago.
