The Townsend Harris Hawks Boys Tennis team battled back from defeats at first and second singles to defeat the Cardozo Judges 3-2 in League A1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Marcus Smith, who recently won the PSAL Individual State Qualifier tournament, defeated Townsend Harris’ Ethan Nittolo 10-2 to win the first singles point for Cardozo. Then at second singles, Cardozo’s Christian Gloria took down Maxim Prohorov 10-4 to put the Judges in a good position to nail down the victory.

The Hawks would rattle off the next three matches at third singles, first doubles and second doubles to come out on the winning end. The tightest match came at first doubles as Daniel Corona and Frank Nicolazzi beat Tsun Long Leung and William Kofman 10-6.

The deciding match came at second doubles, with Townsend Harris’ Derrick Mu and Jeremy Hirsch beating David Song and Kalinga de Alwis of Cardozo 10-1.

The win keeps Townsend Harris atop the A1 standings with a record of 9-2, while Cardozo drops to 5-3.
