For the first time since 1997, the Baruch Bearcats women’s tennis team is City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champions after defeating Hunter College 5-0 in the conference title on Tuesday afternoon at Queens College.

Baruch got things started on the doubles court and quickly opened up a 3-0 advantage as all three doubles courts took care of business.

And then, as they had done all year, it was singles players Daria Vasekina and Isabel Arias who would clinch the victory for the Bearcats. Vasekina defeated  Janani Bavanandan 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and Arias beat Angelina Usherenko 6-2, 6-0 to seal the deal.

“I am very proud of the team,” head coach Florin Giuglescu told Baruch Athletics. "This team was together all season and each contributed equally to this championship. Hard work and team support helped made this championship possible."

Vasekina took home Tournament MVP honors. She went 12-0 in singles and 13-0 in doubles overall this fall.

The win moves Baruch to 13-0 on the year, and earns them a birth in the NCAA tournament next May.
