St. John’s Rebhuhn, Columbia’s Weintraub Named ITA Coaches of the Year

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its end of the year honors on Monday, and St. John’s men’s tennis head coach Eric Rebhuhn and Columbia women’s tennis head coach Ilene Weintraub were both named Coaches of the Year for the Northeast Region.

Rebhuhn led St. John’s to an historic season. The Red Storm have 21 victories ahead of its NCAA Tournament appearance, the most wins in the program’s history, and tying the program record for 10 victories at home. It notched one of the biggest wins in the school’s history when it defeated Harvard 4-3 back in February.

St. John’s take on South Florida in the NCAA Tournament first-round on Saturday.

Ilene Weintraub led the Columbia women’s tennis team to a 13-8 season and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Lions captured the East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) championship in February, beating Harvard and Dartmouth on the same day to win the tournament.

Leading the way for Columbia this season was senior Kanika Vaidya, whom the ITA named Northeast Region Player of the Year. Vaidya went 19-1 this season and won the Ivy League Player of the Year award. She went 7-0 in conference play, and in a road non-conference contest against Miami , she defeated Stephanie Wagner who was ranked #6 in the country at the time.

Columbia will battle LSU in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
