College Recap: St. John’s Powers Past Stony Brook

St. John’s Women Shut Out Stony Brook
After having its seven-match winning streak snapped against Harvard last weekend, the St. John’s women’s tennis team bounced back on Friday, knocking off Stony Brook 4-0.

The Red Storm won the first two doubles flights, as Jessica Livianu and Anna Morozova won 6-1 at first doubles and Stephanie Elgegre and Jaide Collins won 6-1 at second doubles to secure the doubles point for St. John’s.

Livianu would knock off Yana Nikolaeva 6-2, 6-0 at first singles, and St. John’s would win at fifth and sixth singles to clinch the victory, as Olaya Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu won their fifth and sixth singles matches, respectively.

The St. John’s men’s tennis team lost its fourth consecutive match over the weekend as Brown knocked them off 4-0 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

 

NYU Men Sweep Weekend Matches
The NYU men got back on the winning track over the weekend, winning both of its matches over Brandeis and Colby.

On Friday, the Violets beat Brandeis 6-3, led by Umberto Setter’s 6-1, 6-2 win at first singles. It also won two of the three doubles matches, and won the fourth, fifth and sixth singles flights to clinch the victory.

On Sunday, NYU edged Colby College 5-4 at Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx. Once again, the Violets won two of the three doubles matches to help build an early lead. It would get wins from third, fourth and fifth singles to win its second straight match and complete the weekend sweep.

NYU Women Beat St. Lawrence, Edged By Brandeis
The women’s tennis team at NYU cruised past St. Lawrence University on Friday, winning all nine flights for the 9-0 shutout victory.

It couldn’t complete the weekend sweep, however, as Brandeis, the 21st ranked team in the country in Division III, edged the Violets 5-4 on Sunday.

The clinching match came from fourth singles, as Olivia Leavitt beat Rupa Ganesh 6-4, 6-4 to seal the Brandeis victory.
