The New York Empire presented by Citi fell to the San Diego Aviators tonight, 21-16, at Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
The NY Empire struggled in the first two sets against the Aviators falling behind 10-6, before a third-set win tied the overall match at 11. Raven Klaasen and Mark Philippoussis teamed up to extend the Aviators lead to 16-14 heading into the mixed doubles and final set.
Darija Jurak and Klaasen proved to be too much for the NY Empire’s Kirsten Flipkens and Marcus Willis, winning the final set 5-2, earning the 21-16 victory for the Aviators.
The NY Empire falls to 3-4 on the season while the Aviators improve to 4-2, tied for first place in the overall Mylan World TeamTennis presented by GEICO standings with the Philadelphia Freedoms.
Last evening, the New York Empire recorded the most aces of the night, 12, on the Mylan World TeamTennis schedule. As part of the Mylan WTT Aces Program, the City Parks Foundation will receive $1,000 as the team’s selected charity.

The New York Empire face Andy Roddick and the Philadelphia Freedoms on Tuesday, July 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Michael J. Hagan Arena on Saint Joseph's University’s campus and on Wednesday, July 26, the Washington Kastles host the NY Empire at Kastles Stadium at the Charles E. Smith Center at 7 p.m. ET.
The New York Empire returns home to Court 17 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday, July 27. Genie Bouchard will make her New York Empire debut against the Orange County Breakers at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
