Action kicks off Monday on the final Grand Slam of 2017, as the U.S. Open gets underway at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows. Mother Nature should cooperate on Day One of the Open with sunny skies giving way to clouds and temps peaking in the upper 70s.
As the men and women prep to take the courts of the National Tennis Center, the Americans in the main draw will shine brightly, as 16 American men and women are in action in Round One.
Kicking things off at 11:00 a.m. at Arthur Ashe Stadium, American Varvara Lepchenko faces the heavily favored Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza, the number three seed. Each shares a win over the other, with their most recent meeting in Brisbane where Muguruza was forced to retire. One of Lepchenko ‘s best Grand Slam results came at 2015 U.S. Open, when she reached the Round of 16 before falling to Victoria Azarenka.
Also on Ashe Monday afternoon, qualifier Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia will meet the ninth-seed, American Venus Williams for the very first time. Venus is making her 19th appearance at the U.S. Open, having won back-to-back titles in 2000 and 2001, with a runner-up appearance in her debut in Flushing Meadows 20 years ago, back in 1997.
Other American women, including Sloane Stephens, Lauren Davis, Sofia Kenin, Claire Liu, Sachia Vickery and Julia Boserup will be featured throughout the day.
Under the lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium Monday evening after the Opening Ceremony, wild card Maria Sharapova of Russia will face the second seeded Simona Halep of Romania in a star-studded matchup. Making 11th appearance at U.S. Open since her debut in 2003 Sharapova is appearing at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2014. She brings a perfect 6-0 mark into her match against Halep, who is making her eighth U.S. Open appearance.
Also in action Monday afternoon is the fifth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark taking on Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu. Wozniacki is making her 11th consecutive appearance at the U.S. Open where she is a two-time runner-up in 2009 (a loss to Kim Clijsters) and in 2014 (a loss to Serena Williams). The qualifier Buzarnescu is ranked 133rd in the world, and is making her Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2017 U.S. Open.
On the men’s side of the draw, the American presence is strong as well, as 10 take to the courts for opening round action, highlighted by the 10th-seeded John Isner taking on France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert in a matinee meeting at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Known as a doubles specialist, Hebert won the 2015 U.S. Open Doubles Championship with Nicholas Mahut and won the 2016 Doubles Championship at Wimbledon. Isner and Herbert have met just once before, in opening round action of the 2014 French Open, a 7-6(5), 7-6(4), 7-5 win by Isner.
The 13th-seeded Jack Sock will face Australia’s Jordan Thompson to cap the day off on Louis Armstrong. In one meeting earlier this year, Thompson defeated Sock in Davis Cup Qualifying action.
Other Americans in action throughout the day include Tennys Sandgren taking on the number five seeded Croatian and 2014 U.S. Open champ, Marin Cilic in afternoon action at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sandgren is making his main draw debut at the U.S. Open after failing to qualify for the event the previous seven times (2009 and 2011-16), having won the 2017 USTA Roland Garros Wild Card Challenge to earn his spot in the main draw.
