American Shelby Rogers held off her compatriot Kayla Day at the U.S. Open on Wednesday.
Day three at the U.S. Open played host to a few matchups between American women, and it was Coco Vandeweghe and Shelby Rogers who led the charge into the second round in Flushing Meadows.
Rogers took on teenager Kayla Day, and was able to outlast the youngster 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. She broke Day for a 5-4 lead in the final set and consolidated it with a hold to close things out.
It was a tough break for Day, who advanced to the second round at the U.S. Open last year, as her back tightened up towards the end of the match.
Kayla Day fought hard but came up short against Rogers.
“It really started to flare up in the 1-1 game,” Day said afterwards. “She served really well, mixing it up a lot and I had a hard time reading it. I definitely had to be very focused on my service games which I thought I did a really good job of until the end.”
Rogers moves into a showdown with 25th seeded Australian Daria Gavrilova, who ousted American qualifier Allie Kiick 6-2, 6-1.
Vandeweghe had to fight back from a set down as she defeated Alison Riske 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“To play one of your really good friends is not easy,” Vandeweghe said. “But we’ve played a lot. We’ve kind of come up through the ranks together, playing the challenger tour together. We’ve spent a lot of time together, Fed Cup, middle-of-nowhere places on the challenge tour.
It’s not easy to play one of your good friends. But I’m happy to come away with the win.”
The next match for Vandeweghe will be a big one as she looks to make it out of the second round in Flushing Meadows for the first time. She plays Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur next. Jabeur eliminated American wild card Brienne Minor in straight sets on Wednesday.
In the other all-American matchup, Sofia Kenin pushed into the third round with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(0) win over Sachia Vickery. Kenin saved a couple of match points and broke back down 5-6 in the final set, and carried that momentum into the tiebreaker, winning all seven points.
