Queens College and Adelphi will be co-hosting the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional Championships Presented by Oracle this weekend at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Both the men's and women's championships began on Friday afternoon. The regionals will run through the weekend and will culminate on Monday, Sept. 25.
The Knights' men's and women's teams will have a strong group representing Queens College, looking to win some regional hardware. Last season, senior Roman Laga of the men's tennis team partnered with former Knight Sharvill Nawghre to win the East Regional Doubles Championship.
After starting the season 5-0, the Queens women's team has three singles players and two doubles teams seeded in the top 16. Junior Reehan Rashad is third, classmate Laura Ortega Jover is fifth, and sophomore Louisa Brunetti is 14th. In doubles, Rashad and Ortega Jover are third, while Brunetti and senior Emy Alplund are 10th.
For the Queens men, it will be their first competition of the year after winning the East Coast Conference (ECC) and regional championships in the spring. Two of the men's singles players and two doubles tandems are seeded in the top 16. Senior Gabriel Mendez is ninth, and junior Richard Sec is 10th. Meanwhile in doubles, Laga and junior Cosme Jubera are third, while Mendez and senior Lucas Martinez are sixth.
For Adelphi, Rebecca Fakas and Karen Serina are the top seeds in the women's doubles main draw, and Fakas is also the seventh seed in singles. Elizabeth Kallenberg, who is the No.9 seed in doubles alongside Samantha Perri, also made the singles main draw directly, and will face a qualifier in her first match.
Matteo Cannavera is the No.5 seed in the men's singles, while he and Sabin Adrian Saveluc are the No.13 seeds in doubles, representing the Adelphi men.
