The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the governing body of men’s professional tennis, is pleased to announce the return of the Arizona Tennis Classic now called the “Carvana Arizona Tennis Classic” after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. Running from March 14 through March 20, the tournament, which is part of the ATP Challenger Tour, takes place at Phoenix Country Club, at 2901 E. 7th St., and benefits Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

The popularity of tennis has continued to explode over the past few years and in particular as people sought safe ways to stay active and healthy during the pandemic. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) reports tennis participation increased in 2020 by 22 percent over 2019, adding, “Of the 21.64 million Americans who say they played tennis [in 2020], 6.78 million were new and returning players. Nearly 3 million of these were new players (2.96 million), a 44 percent increase over new players in 2019.”

“This event is strategically placed on the tennis calendar between two of the biggest ATP tournaments in the world — the BNP Paribas Indian Wells and the Miami Open — ensuring a strong player field as our 2019 Champion Matteo Berrettini of Italy is currently world ranked # 6 and reached the 2019 US Open Semi-finals, was a Finalist at Wimbledon 2021, and a Semi-finalist at the recent Australian Open,” says Jonathan Levine, founder of the Arizona Tennis Classic. “Guests can expect to see many of today’s top-ranked players and some of the world’s rising professional stars as they compete for the 2022 title.”

Since its inception in 1978, competition on the ATP Challenger Tour has been intense, with players fighting for critical ATP Rankings points and prize money. These tournaments give fans the excitement of watching world-class tennis in a more intimate atmosphere. By providing opportunities for emerging stars to develop their talents, it ensures the continued success and growth of professional tennis.

The ATP Challenger Tour has spring boarded the fame of the sport’s most accomplished stars such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick. Many players launch their career at this level, with the goal of rising up the ATP Rankings, competing on the ATP Tour and in Grand Slam tournaments.

The Carvana Arizona Tennis Classic features top 100 world ranked players competing in a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw in day and evening sessions.
