Cilic Beats Edmund To Reach Melbourne Final

Marin Cilic advanced to the third Grand Slam championship match of his career on Thursday, using precision and focus to defeat Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-2 in the Australian Open semifinals.

“I think overall, consistently, I’m playing better,” said Cilic. “I think I am performing better when you look at match after match. I think at the [2014] U.S. Open, I played just amazing tennis. But it was more difficult for me to keep it for a long period of time. Now I feel that with this kind of tennis, I can keep it throughout the season. That’s my goal, at the end of the year, that I can look back and that I happy about my performances at a consistent level.”

Cilic saved the only two break points he faced and fired 25 winners to beat Edmund in two hours and 18 minutes.

He moves on to play the winner of Friday’s semifinal between defending champion Roger Federer and South Korea’s Hyeon Chung.

“I think you have Roger as a player who has been one of the most successful at these stages of Grand Slam, and also at Grand Slam level I think his performances were such a long period of time, especially when it gets to quarterfinals, semifinals, finals, he’s getting better and better and better and playing great tennis. So with him it’s always a big challenge,” Cilic said when asked who he would prefer to play in the final. “With Chung, I played him a few times, and looking at his game, I think he has improved a lot in the last six to 12 months. And he has matured, I think, playing really, really good tennis, entertaining to watch. Amazing defensive player and also hitting big from both sides.

It’s no answer … I’m going to focus on myself.”
