The Columbia men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Monmouth 4-0 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

 

The Columbia men’s tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Monmouth 4-0 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Columbia got the day started by securing the doubles point, as Jack Lin and William Matheson defeated Al Gomez Estrada and Max Benaim at second doubles, and Victor Pham and Jackie Tang won 6-4 over Nicola Pipoli and Will Cooke Wharton in the first doubles flight.

With the doubles point in hand, the Lions turned to singles play. Austen Huang bolstered the Columbia lead by beating Wharton 6-0, 6-2 at fifth singles.

Lin brought Columbia within one victory of advancing by winning 6-2, 6-2 over Estrada, and Timothy Wang clinched the overall team win with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph against Sergio Martinez at sixth singles.

Columbia now moves into the second round, where it will take on Virginia, who defeated Virginia Commonwealth 4-0 earlier in the day.
