World No. 4 Juan Martin del Potro is facing another long road to recovery after he fractured his kneecap at the Shanghai Masters last week.

The injury occurred during a Round of 16 match against Borna Coric when del Potro had an awkward step and fell to the ground.

“I made a weird movement with the knee and hit the floor very hard. I felt intense pain,” said del Potro.

He attempted to play afterwards but had to retire following the first set.

“It’s very difficult for me to think about recovery again,” said del Potro, who is all too familiar with injuries throughout his career. “I did not expect this to happen.”
