Roger Federer advanced to the seventh Australian Open final of his career on Friday, but didn’t do so in the fashion he would have liked.

The defending champion and 19-time Grand Slam winner held a 6-1, 5-2 lead against 21-year-old South Korean Hyeon Chung, before the tournament’s breakout star was forced to retire with blisters on his left foot.

“I’ve played with blisters in the past and it hurts. A lot,” said Federer, referring to Chung’s discomfort. “At some point, it’s just too much and you just can’t take it anymore, and when you realize there is no way you can come back and you make things really worse, it’s better to stop. That’s why this one is bittersweet. I’m really happy to be in the finals, but not like this.”

Federer quickly took control of this match by jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. A couple of games later, he wrapped up the opener on his fifth set point.

The Swiss Maestro broke early in the second set and built himself a 3-1 cushion. Chung began getting treatment on his foot after the next game, and only a couple of games later, at 2-5 down, the pain became too intolerable, and he was forced to retire.

Now into his 30th Major final, Federer was complimentary of his semifinal opponent:

“He has great composure. He is already a great player, but we are talking about the next level of excellence, and I think he’s going to achieve that,” said Federer. “We’re going to see much more of him. Top 10 for sure. The rest? We’ll see. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. He’s done very well and I can see why he beat the likes of Novak [Djokovic] and Sacha [Zverev] and all the others this week and in the past. I think he’s going to be a great, great player.”

Federer will now turn his focus onto Marin Cilic, the sixth-seed Croat who beat Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund in his semifinal. It will be a rematch of last year’s Wimbledon final, and Federer is 8-1 all-time against Cilic.
