Federer Rolls Past Berdych, Will Meet Chung in Aussie Final Four

Roger Federer defeated Tomas Berdych for the 20th time on Wednesday, doing so in straight sets 7-6(1), 6-3, 6-4 to clinch his spot in the Australian Open semifinals.

The defending champion got off to a bit of a slow start in this one as Berdych raced out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set. He would hold set points at 5-3 and 6-5 in the first set, but squandered both as the Swiss went on to win the opening set tiebreaker.

With the first set in hand, Federer did not leave any opening for the 19th seeded Czech to work his way back into the match. He cracked 37 winners to Berdych’s 14, completely taking the fight to Berdych to book his spot in the semifinals.

“I had to get a bit lucky, a bit angry, a bit frustrated, a bit antsy,” said Federer. “I’m really happy I got out of that first set. That ended up being the key to the match.”

Berdych knew that was the match’s turning point as well.

“It was a good start. I had good chances, a couple set points,” he said. “Then I think he just got more confident after he saved the first set. Then it was very difficult with him again.”

The win was the 92nd all-time for Federer in Melbourne and he will now enter into the 43rd Grand Slam semifinal of his career. In that semifinal, he will take on South Korea’s Hyeon Chung, who continued his fantastic run with a 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3 win over American Tennys Sandgren.

Chung, 21, is now the first player from South Korea to play in a major semifinal.

“I think all the people [in Korea] are watching Australian Open now because we make history in Korea,” he said afterwards.

Chung’s run here can be traced back to his triumph at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan at the end of 2017. He won the title at the inaugural tournament and has ridden that momentum all the way into the final four in Melbourne.

Federer admitted he did not know much about Chung, but did see some of his match against Djokovic earlier in the tournament.

“I’m very excited to play Chung, I thought he played an incredible match against Novak,” said Federer. “To beat him here is one of the touch things to do in our sport, I believe.

I think it’s an interesting match for me. I’ll definitely have to look into how I need to play against him because he has some great qualities, especially defensively, like Novak has. Right now I couldn’t tell you how I need to play him. One thing I know is I’m going to be playing aggressive. I don’t know how I’m going to do that exactly yet.”
