It took nearly two hours, but sixth-seed Caroline Garcia of France pushed her way into the U.S. Open third round on Thursday, outlasting Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 on Grandstand.

Garcia ripped 27 winners and secured the lone break point of the third and deciding set to advance.

She moves on to play the winner of France’s Kristina Mladenovic and 30th seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro.

Former champion Angelique Kerber regrouped in her final set to defeat Johanna Larsson 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Kerber will take on 29th seed Dominika Cibulkova next, who won 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-4 over Su-Wei Hsieh of Chinese Taipei.
