Angelique Kerber looked like the player that was once ranked No. 1 in the world on Tuesday as the 21st seeded German dismantled 17th seed American Madison Keys 6-1, 6-2 to advance into the Australian Open semifinals.

“It’s always tough against Madison but I tried to just go out and play my game,” said Kerber. “I was trying to play aggressively from the first point, and moving good and also bringing a lot of balls back. I think this is always my game the last few weeks that I tried to improve, and this was also the plan today, I mean, going out there, trying to take the match in my hands.”

Kerber needed just 51 minutes to move past Keys, losing just four points on her first serve throughout the contest.

The German made her breakthrough in Melbourne two years ago and has seemed to have regained that form so far this season.

She will square off with current world number one Simona Halep of Romania for a spot in the final.

Halep ousted Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-2 to reach the Australian Open semifinals for the first time in her career.

It was Pliskova who got the upper hand in this match early on, racing out to a 3-0 advantage. But from there, the top-seed won 12 of 14 games to turn the much-anticipated quarterfinal into a rout.

“For sure, it wasn’t my best start,” said Halep afterwards. “I just knew that I had to restart, actually, after three games—just to stop missing that much and to move better, which I did pretty well in the end. Then I just started to open the court, to play my style, and I served well today. Everything went pretty well for me.”

Kerber leads the head-to-head between the two 5-4, but the two haven’t played one another since the WTA Finals in 2016.
