Merrick, Long Island native Scott Lipsky and partner Divij Sharan moved into the Delray Beach Open quarterfinals on Wednesday, defeating recent New York Open finalists Wesley Koolhof and Artem Sitak 7-6, 6-2.

“We’ve played five or six tournaments together. We won one, and got to a final in another,” Lipsky said of the partnership. “We’ve played well together.”

On Tuesday night, 2011 champion Juan Martin del Potro, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, began his campaign with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over France’s Jeremy Chardy.

Del Potro will take on young American Frances Tiafoe, who is one of eight Americans who advanced to the second round, joining Taylor Fritz, John Isner, Steve Johnson, Reilly Opelka, Jared Donaldson and Donald Young as the other players from the United States who won their openers.

Young’s run came to an end on Wednesday when Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy beat him 7-6(3), 6-3.
